About time: What’s Expected in Apple’s WWDC 2024

Apple 2024

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off on June 10, 2024. It is expected to focus heavily on the company’s latest AI-powered software features for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices. While no new hardware is anticipated, you never know! Apple will likely unveil the next generations of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and so on but with a major emhphaisis on AI capabilities.

AI-Powered Features in iOS 18

iOS 18 is set to introduce a range of AI-powered features. These include smarter Siri actions that can handle more complex tasks like summarizing emails, opening specific documents, and managing notes. Apple is also expected to offer AI-generated emoji and auto-generated playlists in Apple Music tailored to users’ preferences. Additionally, iOS 18 may include AI photo editing capabilities similar to Google’s Magic Editor. Creating the ability for users to easily remove unwanted objects and fill in gaps using generative AI. However, some of these advanced AI features may be limited to newer devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and later, as well as M1 or newer iPads and Macs, due to the higher processing power required.

New Capabilities in visionOS 2

visionOS 2, the first major software update for Apple’s Vision Pro headset! If you haven’t tested out the tech, any Apple store allows you to schedule a free demo of the entire experience! What we are getting? They are expected to introduce several new capabilities and improvements. These include new native Apple apps like Books, Calendar, and Maps, which were previously only available in compatibility mode. Another feature I use all the time is the Live Captions. All speech will also be added, providing real-time captions for everything in the user’s view, benefiting deaf and hard-of-hearing users as well as those who prefer captions. Super helpful for FaceTime calls in loud places! Additionally, visionOS 2 is likely to address missing features from the first iteration. Respiration tracking may also be introduced in the Mindfulness app, using the Vision Pro’s camera array and sensors.

Advanced Siri Enhancements

Apple is planning a major AI overhaul for Siri in iOS 18, enabling it to control individual features within apps for the first time. Siri will be able to perform tasks like opening specific documents, moving notes between folders, deleting emails, summarizing articles, emailing web links, and accessing Apple News. These advanced capabilities required Apple’s engineers to redesign Siri’s underlying software using large language models (LLMs). Similar to those used in chatbots like ChatGPT. While Apple is exploring integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini technologies, Siri’s functionality is expected to primarily rely on Apple’s own LLM work.

AI-Powered Health Monitoring

AI-powered health monitoring systems are revolutionizing healthcare by providing continuous, real-time monitoring of patients’ vital signs and health parameters. These systems integrate with wearable devices, remote patient monitoring, and advanced data analytics to deliver personalized insights and early detection. By analyzing vast amounts of patient data, AI algorithms can identify subtle changes that may indicate the onset of medical conditions. This allows for timely interventions and preventive measures. AI-powered health monitoring also enables remote management of chronic conditions, reducing the burden on healthcare systems and improving patient outcomes. This sector is one very near and dear to me and one I am very excited to see what this new tech can do!
